Subtle, yet effective

For those of you in search of the True Meaning of Christmas, I give you... the burning cross: The American Family Association is selling this little fashion statement for a mere $81.85.

Decorate this holiday season with the Original Christmas Cross to remind your friends, family, neighbors, and all who drive by your home, office, or church of the real meaning of Christmas. You won't find the Original Christmas Cross in stores, so order online today!
For those of you having to cut back this Christmas, I should point out that you can achieve the same effect with a pair of two-by-fours and some gasoline. Dramatic, too!

Bathrooms. Again.

The right is going back to an old standby; 'transgender bathrooms'. Remember Phyllis Schlafly hyperventilating about 'unisex bathrooms' in the seventies? (Oh yeah, and women in combat? Eeek.)

Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, says Obama's new non-discrimination policy will be an "open door" for gender-confused and cross-dressing federal employees.

"What's the Obama administration going to do to protect women in federal restrooms?" the activist asks. "Since men [wearing] dresses apparently are going to be protected under gender-identity provisions, what about the women in the restrooms in the White House and other federal buildings? What's going to be done to protect their rights?"

LaBarbera even wonders if there is going to have to be a new federal outlay for the building of new "gender-free, transgender restrooms."

What is with the rightwing and their bathroom fixations? Transference? Projection?

Just thinking...

After all the Georges, Williams, Jameses and Johns, isn't it kind of cool to have a President named Barack?

Which makes me wonder. What do you suppose they're going to do with barackobama.com? It would be a shame to mothball it after so many people kind of dug in there - do you suppose a President can keep a personal domain running for, like, non-'business' stuff? Like say, he wanted to highlight a nonpartisan thing like, for instance, Habitat for Humanity needs two hundred volunteers in Georgia or something like that?

Do you suppose the National Archivist is ready to deal with a President's Facebook page?

I'm just saying

From Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight.com:

What I actually found upon leaving the studio, however, was a spontaneous display of joy in the Nation's Capital. Mere blocks from the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue, in a buttoned-down section of America's only remaining buttoned-downed town, horns were honking in a ticker-tape stream until three in the morning, and strangers black, white and otherwise were hooting and hollering and giving one another thumbs-ups and high-fives as they passed each other on the street.
Can you imagine any other candidate, however worthy, whose victory would have occasioned spontaneous street celebrations, not only within the US but all around the world?
