Where were the buses?

So I wondered below where were all the municipal buses that a city the size of New Orleans was bound to have. Well, here ya go:

The caption on the AP Wire photo reads: " An aerial view of flooded school buses in a lot, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in New Orleans, LA. The flood is a result of Hurricane Katrina that passed through the area last Monday.(AP Photo/Phil Coale) "

I've copied the photo in case the URL changes, but it can currently be viewed here.

I kept on wondering about that... Why oh why did they NOT use the school buses to evacuate the poor and folks who had no transportation????

From a practical Standpoint - they might have been able to salvage the busses (which I seem to recall cost close to $100K each) - and from a Moral, ethical and Family of Man viewpoint - they might have been able to save LIVES!!!

THIS is a might travesty. And politicians from ALL sides should be hanging their heads in shame that they let it happen.
