I think I'll go shopping

NYT: 25-year-old law student buys the New York Observer... succeeds in making the Prairie Angel feel very very old.

Gawker:

A 25-year-old law student just bought the Observer. Let that sink in. Stare at your hands. Take a deep breath. Now piss on your resume and shoot yourself in the head.

Looking on the bright side, Gawker notices he's kinda hot.

Caging Hemingway's Cats?

Are these people nuts??

The caretakers of Ernest Hemingway's Key West home want a federal judge to intervene in their dispute with the U.S. Department of Agriculture over the six-toed cats that roam the property.

More than 50 descendants of a multi-toed cat the novelist received as a gift in 1935 wander the grounds of the home, where Hemingway lived for more than 10 years and wrote "A Farewell to Arms" and "To Have and Have Not."

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum disputes the USDA's claim that it is an "exhibitor" of cats and needs to have a USDA Animal Welfare License, according to a complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Miami.

...

Agency inspectors who have repeatedly visited the property since October 2003 have never indicated any concerns about the welfare of the cats.

But they have said a 6-foot-high, brick-and-mortar fence Hemingway built around the property in 1937 did not sufficiently contain the 53 cats, which should be caged, according to the complaint.

Caging the cats, some of which are 19 years old or older, would traumatize them, and the home's designation as a National Historic Site prohibits extending the height of the fence, the complaint said.

Worried Sick!

The Prairie Angel is worried sick, just sick, I say. When last seen, her darling Anderson was in Israel, six or seven miles from Lebanon and planning to go to Lebanon today.

Blog again, baby. Let us know you're alright.

Christian Death Cults

This is kind of sick - there are people actively hoping that Israel destroys Damascus since that will mean we're closer to the End of the World and the coming of Jesus. I am sooo not kidding. Read some of the threads on this 'Rapture Ready' bulletin board. WARNING: Scary shit - they really believe this stuff.

Putin to Bush: No Thanks.

Well, duh...

Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected a suggestion from U.S. President George W. Bush that his country should emulate democracy in Iraq.
That Iraqi democracy is working out so well for them that it's hard to understand Putin here. Oh well, he probably doesn't want his family kidnapped and killed, the wimp.

Speaking of Anthrax

You might want to disinvite Ann Coulter from your next fund-raiser. Turns out the bitch is poisonous. Coulter Reception Netted $0 for Beauprez

Here we go again...

Piss off BushCo, get Anthraxed.

The New York Times said Friday it was investigating an envelope received at the paper containing white powder, raising fears of a possible recurrence of anthrax-tainted letters sent to newsrooms and other offices in late 2001.

A Thousand Words

Croning

One of my many freelance gigs (in expiation of my sins, I guess) is updating a bunch of pages about celebs, and I now know way more about the likes of Eminem and Nelly than I really wanted to.

Yesterday I discovered I'm one half year older than Oprah. And I thought she was older than God; maybe like babysat him when he was little or something.

Determined to look on the brighter side, as is my wont, I shall now refer to Oprah as 'that bratty little Winfrey child'.

Bush is SOLVING Global Warming!

No really! He said so!

Hearts and Minds

From Training Marines How Not to Kill:

"Over the last 12 months or so we killed about 1000 Iraqis at blocking positions and checkpoints," the captain told the grunts. "About 60 -- six zero -- we could demonstrate that, yeah, he was a bad guy. He was an insurgent. Six zero out of about 1000. So all we're doing -- if we don't communicate what we want them to do, all we're doing is creating more enemies."
The Captain gets it.

"We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad"

From NYT: Hate Groups Are Infiltrating the Military, Group Asserts

Winning hearts and minds...

Huh? ...wait.

First I read headline in HuffPo: Shell Deems Fuel Derived From Food “Morally Inappropriate”... and thought 'great... a politically correct reason for continuing our dependence on fossil fuels...'.

Then I read the article:

Royal Dutch Shell, the world's top marketer of biofuels, considers using food crops to make biofuels "morally inappropriate" as long as there are people in the world who are starving, an executive said on Thursday.

Eric G Holthusen, Fuels Technology Manager Asia/Pacific, said the company's research unit, Shell Global Solutions, has developed alternative fuels from renewable resources that use wood chips and plant waste rather than food crops that are typically used to make the fuels.

Okay. Never mind. You're good.

What the fuck would Jesus do?

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't waste a quarter of a million dollars putting up a Statue of Liberty holding a cross instead of a torch.

"Science"

Has Noah's Ark Been Found?

Texas archaeologists believe they may have located the remains of Noah's Ark in Iran's Elburz mountain range.

"I can't imagine what it could be if it is not the Ark," said Arch Bonnema of the Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration (B.A.S.E) Institute, a Christian archeology organization dedicated to looking for biblical artifacts.

Arch Bonnema isn't a scientist. Because I could imagine several things it might be that aren't the Ark. What a moron.
